What to Look for in a Portable Speaker
Before you spend money, here are the six factors that actually matter.
Sound Quality
Look for balanced frequency response. Big bass numbers on a spec sheet don't always translate to good sound.
Battery Life
Real-world battery is typically 20-30% less than advertised. Anything over 20h rated is solid for a day out.
Waterproofing
IP67 means submerged to 1m for 30 min. IP65 handles splashes. IP67+ if you plan to use it near water.
Bluetooth Range
Bluetooth 5.0+ gives reliable 30m+ range. Older 4.2 typically cuts out past 10-15m with walls in the way.
Weight & Size
Under 500g is truly portable. 500gโ1.5kg is backpack-friendly. Over 1.5kg is better for home/car use.
Charging
USB-C is the standard now. Avoid speakers that still use micro-USB or proprietary cables โ too inconvenient.
